270,000 iPhones sold on launch day

Apple last night confirmed 270,000 iPhone sales in the 30 hour period from its launch to the end of the company’s third quarter. The company also confirmed it expects to sell its millionth iPhone during the current (fourth) quarter.

The new devices were only made available for sale for 30 hours during the quarter. Apple also confirmed that AT&T only activated 146,000 of these iPhones within that time period, though the company confirmed that most common activation problems at AT&T had now been resolved.

Apple chief operating officer Tim Cook told analysts that AT&T had told him it had sold more iPhones across the debut weekend than it had in the first month on sale of any product it had ever sold.

Cook stressed his confidence that Apple will sell ten million iPhones by the end of 2008.

Apple chief financial officer Peter Oppenheimer told analysts that Apple plans to reveal its international network partners for the iPhone later in this quarter, with iPhones coming to Europe later this year (Q4) and Asia next year.

The company also stressed that it had experienced no cannibalization in iPod sales during the quarter.
