Apple Japan admits pricing probe

Apple Japan confirmed that a raid on its offices conducted Tuesday by Japan’s Fair Trade Commission (FTC) was over the company’s business practices.

“Members of Japan’s Fair Trade Commission arrived unexpectedly at Apple Japan’s headquarters yesterday to begin an investigation into Apple’s business practices,” the company said in a statement.”Apple is offering its full co-operation and is confident that Apple’s business practices are both within the law and exemplary.”

A spokeswoman for the company would not offer any more details on the investigation, although sources have confirmed that the FTC is investigating Apple’s pricing of its iMac and iBook personal computers and whether the company attempted to force retailers to sell the machines at its recommended retail price. Such an action would be a violation of Japan’s anti-monopoly law.
