Intel quad-core chips for 2006

Intel will release its quad-core desktop and server chips almost a year ahead of schedule, the company revealed this week.

Speaking during the Intel earnings call, CEO Paul Otellini said: “We notified customers that we’re pulling in both a desktop and server of the first quad-core processors into the fourth quarter of this year from the first half of 2007.”

Apple Insider claims the chips are code-named Kentsfield (desktop) and Clovertown (server). It describes these as “candidates to appear in future revisions of Macs”.

Otellini also confirmed Intel’s plan to introduce Merom, its Core 2 Duo chip for notebooks “in a few weeks”.
