PS4.5 Production Forced By AMD New Production Process: Rumor

New clues about the long rumored PlayStation 4.5, also called 4.5 or Neo, arrive from a Reddit user Flight714 analysis of a recent VR World story. Based on this analysis, it looks like Sony was forced to start the production of this new model because of changes at AMD.

According to this report, AMD is preparing to streamline its production process to support new 14-nanometer FinFET transistors, as opposed to PS4’s 28-nanometer planar transistor. In a normal condition, Sony would use a die shrink technique to fit the old chip to the new size.

This is not possible this time around anyway, since AMD is said to be pairing that shift with the introduction of new Zen core CPUs. Therefore, Sony had to decide whether they would keep producing PlayStation 4 with the current transistors or join AMD’s new standard. Sticking to the old would have meant that AMD needed to create a custom production line, which could have made the whole process more expensive.

While this is just a speculation, based on something that hasn’t been announced yet – PS4.5 itself -, the analysis is pretty interesting and reveals how platform holder/console producers usually work and take decisions according to what their suppliers offer them from time to time.
