Former Blizzard, SOE and Relic Developers form new Free-to-Play MMO Studio

Everytime I hear of developers from former mega studios banding together to form a new development studio of their own I get pretty excited. Experienced minds in a new setting can bring about all sorts of wonderful innovations. Of course, it can also mean more of the same, but repackaged to appear “new”.

In the case of Molten Games, lets hope its more of the former. The San Diego, California based studio is comprised of a collection of executives from Blizzard, Sony Online and Relic Entertainment. Of course, all development studios need funding and Molten Games has secured this in spades thanks to a multimillion-dollar investment from NCSoft.

NCSoft appears to be taking a hands off approach when it comes to the developer/publisher relationship. Free from publisher restrictions and with pockets full of cash, the Molten Games team is confident they can create an unparalleled experience which puts the gameplay first and foremost:

“We created Molten Games in order to truly have control over our game development and IP, and we’re going to create something epic,” said Jungwon Hahn, CEO of Molten Games. “Our team understands not only the creation of online games, but the ongoing management of them, better than anyone else in the industry. As we continue to build our team and work on our initial product, gameplay and player experience is going to come first with every decision.”

While still unannounced, we do know Molten Games’ first title will be a triple-A free-to-play MMORPG, with more information to be released at a later date.
